Architectural Director Sue Pasint-Magyar spoke at the AJ Conference on Community Healthcare Design in London last week.

The event, which is for designers and construction professionals within the healthcare industry, debated evolving design approaches and constraints of primary healthcare within local community. Other speakers included Susan Francis (Special Advisor for Health, CABE), developers and PCT directors. A lively discussion on BREEAM also took place.

Sue presented HuntersÂ’ Barkantine scheme in East London as an example of how design can incorporate both community and acute care services under the one roof. The key points included:

•Key design and briefing challenges when accommodating GP facilities, transitional primary care, birthing, dental and community services as well as a pharmacy and café

•Solutions adopted to provide accurate way finding and signage and comfortable spaces ensuring patient privacy

•Special considerations for dealing with infection control

•Lessons learned from end-user feedback: evaluating successes and teething problems of the scheme and whether the combination of services has worked
